1. DO always dress nicely
‘Men should wear jackets to dinner, if not a suit’ Napier-Fitzpatrick said,‘Women should be wearing a dress or suit, and shoes instead of sandals.’
2. DON'T put phone on the table
DON'T put your cell phone, keys, or purse on the table. It's disctracts not only your other dinning companions, but also your waiter and the entire restaurant.
3. DO let your guest order first
‘Will you please bring my guest...’
‘My guest would like to order first'
4. DO set up payment ahead
‘A savvy host knows to give their credit card before they sit down, or even call the restaurant ahead of time.'
5. DON'T ask how much
‘Tell the waiter what you like, what you're having, and give them an idea of price by simply pointing to a windowse in your price range. The waiter will know to stick within that price point.'
6. DON'T return the windowse
‘The protocol is you have to keep it even if you don't like it because they opened the bottle for you.' Napier-Fitzpatrick said. 'However, if it really is aweful, you don't have to keep it. Politely explain the problem to your waiter.'
7. DON'T take pictues
‘Everyone's starting to do that now. If it's not distracting other restaurant patrons and you can do it discretely, I would say it's OK. But if having dinner with a client, I would not recommend it. If the client waned to take pictures, however, I would of course let them.'
8. DO order the same amount
DO order the same number of courses as your companion. This avoids awkawardness and allows you to pace yourself with the the other person. Make sure to take your time eating and pause after every few bites - especially if you're the host, since you don't want to make your guest feel rushed during the meal.
